It’s not easy to see the current state of your roof because it’s not always clear-cut. To the untrained eye, your roof might seem fine even though it may already be in severe disrepair. Above It All Roofing and Construction lists four warning signs that a roof replacement is imminent.
1. Buckling and Curling Shingles
Buckling and curling asphalt shingles are signs that your roof is starting to lose its ability to weather out the elements, or it may simply be past its prime. Shingles that curl and buckle have likely lost their roofing granules as well, which further weakens their ability to resist rain and solar radiation.
2. A Soft Roof Surface
If your roof has a strange, spongy feeling when you walk on it, then the underlayment beneath the shingles is already weak due to moisture damage. As a result, sunlight and heat could enter through your roof boards, causing insulation problems. Due to the risk of falls, you should call a residential roofer to inspect your roof if you suspect your roof’s underlayment is weakening.
3. Granules in the Gutters
Roofing granules naturally get torn off the shingle, often ending up in gutters. While a trace amount of roofing granules is relatively benign, a large amount accumulating in the gutters is a sign your roof is nearing the end of its life span and will require replacement.
4. Your Roof Is Old
Asphalt shingle roofing systems can last for up to 25 years. Beyond this, it’s likely going to start showing signs of wear and tear faster, and its performance dips considerably. If you’re not sure how old your roof is, allow us to perform an in-depth inspection of it.
